What is the difference between an element and a compound?

Element: a pure substance made of only ONE type of atom (e.g., gold, oxygen). Compound: a pure substance made of two or more elements CHEMICALLY combined in a fixed ratio (e.g., HโO, NaCl). Both are pure substances; compounds can be broken down chemically, elements cannot.
