What is the difference between a transverse and a longitudinal wave?

Transverse: particles move PERPENDICULAR to the wave direction (crests & troughs). Longitudinal: particles move PARALLEL to the wave direction (compressions & rarefactions). Example: Light = transverse; Sound = longitudinal.
