ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ โ€” Verbal Noun (Gerund)

A ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ (shem po'al, literally "verb name") is the verbal noun or gerund โ€” the "-ing" form of a verb used as a noun. In English we say "I love swimming" โ€” "swimming" is a gerund (verbal noun). In Hebrew, ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ works the same way.

Why it matters: The oral exam asks you to say what you do at school and what you love. You will use ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ forms.

Structure:

ืื ื™ ืื•ื”ื‘ + ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ โ€” I love [verb-ing]

Common ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ forms for school activities:

Key insight: After words like ืื•ื”ื‘ (love) or ืฉื•ื ื (hate), Hebrew often uses the ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ (gerund), just like English uses the "-ing" form.

  • ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ = verbal noun (gerund) โ€” the "-ing" form used as a noun
  • ืœื™ืžื•ื“ = studying/learning (from ืœืœืžื•ื“)
  • ืชืคื™ืœื” = praying/prayer (from ืœื”ืชืคืœืœ)
  • ืงืจื™ืื” = reading (from ืœืงืจื•ื)
  • ื›ืชื™ื‘ื” = writing (from ืœื›ืชื•ื‘)
  • Use ืฉื ืคื•ืขืœ after ืื•ื”ื‘ (love) or other opinion verbs
