Study Notes

The oral exam asks you to introduce yourself in Hebrew. Here is the full template with English translations alongside each line. Fill in the blanks with your own information.

קוראים לי ___. — My name is ___. (Literally: "They call me ___.")

אני תלמיד / תלמידה בבית ספר אמת כיתה ___.

— I am a student at Emet school, grade ___.

(Use תלמיד if you are male, תלמידה if you are female.)

אני גר / גרה ברחוב ___ בניו יורק.

— I live on ___ street in New York.

(Use גר if you are male, גרה if you are female.)

Describing New York (what it has and does not have):

בניו יורק יש ___. — In New York there is ___.

בניו יורק אין ___. — In New York there is no ___.

Example sentences for the oral exam:

• בניו יורק יש מוזאון גדול — In New York there is a big museum.

• בניו יורק יש הרבה מסעדות — In New York there are many restaurants.

Describing what you do at school:

בבית ספר אנחנו מתפללים כל בוקר.

— At school we pray every morning.

אני לומד / לומדת עברית.

— I study / learn Hebrew.

(לומד = male, לומדת = female)

אני אוהב / אוהבת ___ (שם פועל).

— I love ___ (verbal noun/gerund).

Example:

• אני אוהב לימוד עברית — I love studying Hebrew.

• אני אוהבת קריאה — I love reading.

A שם פועל (shem po'al, literally "verb name") is the verbal noun or gerund — the "-ing" form of a verb used as a noun. In English we say "I love swimming" — "swimming" is a gerund (verbal noun). In Hebrew, שם פועל works the same way.

Why it matters: The oral exam asks you to say what you do at school and what you love. You will use שם פועל forms.

Structure:

אני אוהב + שם פועל — I love [verb-ing]

Common שם פועל forms for school activities:

• לשחות → שחייה — to swim → swimming

• ללמוד → לימוד — to study/learn → studying/learning

• להתפלל → תפילה — to pray → prayer/praying

• לקרוא → קריאה — to read → reading

• לכתוב → כתיבה — to write → writing

• לדבר → דיבור — to speak → speaking

• לאכול → אכילה — to eat → eating

Example sentences:

• אני אוהב לימוד עברית — I love studying Hebrew.

• אני אוהבת קריאה — I love reading.

• תפילה חשובה — Prayer is important.

• לימוד הוא חשוב — Studying is important.

Key insight: After words like אוהב (love) or שונא (hate), Hebrew often uses the שם פועל (gerund), just like English uses the "-ing" form.

Here are model answers for each part of the oral exam. Prepare your own personal version substituting your information.

Question 1: מה שמך? / מה קוראים לך? — What is your name?

Model answer: קוראים לי [your name]. שלום!

Question 2: איפה אתה לומד? — Where do you study?

Model answer: אני תלמיד בבית ספר אמת כיתה ט׳.

(כיתה ט = 9th grade)

Question 3: איפה אתה גר? — Where do you live?

Model answer: אני גר ברחוב [street name] בניו יורק.

Question 4: מה יש / אין בניו יורק? — What is/is not in New York?

Model answers:

• בניו יורק יש מוזאון, מסעדות, וקניון.

• בניו יורק אין מדבר ואין הרים גדולים.

Question 5: מה אתה עושה בבית ספר? — What do you do at school?

Model answer: בבית ספר אנחנו מתפללים כל בוקר. אני לומד עברית, מתמטיקה, ומדעים. אני אוהב לימוד עברית.

Preparation checklist:

• Know how to say your name with קוראים לי

• Know your gender form: תלמיד or תלמידה, גר or גרה

• Prepare 3-4 sentences about what New York has (יש) and does not have (אין)

• Prepare 2-3 sentences about school activities using שם פועל

• Practice aloud — this is an oral exam!
